Dave Willis said, “Don’t use social media to impress people, use it to impact people.” From posting your views on Twitter to seeing the latest updates in politics on Instagram, Social Media has made a huge impact on the current generation.
The lockdown has closed in-person interaction between the school and students, but social media continues to be the link between teachers and students. School activities are updated on Facebook and Instagram, problem solving can be done by WhatsApp, classes are taking place on various online platforms like Zoom, Microsoft teams, Google meet and books are travelling through email.
Some advantages of the usage of social media for school learning are;
⦁ Information sharing
Through social media activities of the school and notices can be spread to the students and parents.
⦁ Research Initiatives
The best way to foster research initiatives is by generating curiosity. Social media does exactly that, students see snippets of news and facts and research more about them to satisfy their curiosity.
⦁ Connecting school to students
With the help of various online tools along with social media, modern educators are able to attract students through distance learning programs.
⦁ Improved Literacy, Communication, And Reading Skills
Reading blogs and expressing their opinion will go a long way in helping students develop better reading and communication skills which will, in turn, improve their literacy.
Social platforms like Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram are being used by almost everyone. These social channels are all about collaborating, networking, sharing and generating knowledge and content – something which is of great value in the context of education. Be it a reminder to students about upcoming events(Via Twitter), establishing a collaborative discussion to debate issues or share ideas (Via Facebook), creating a ‘group’ for teachers to share professional learning opportunities, current research documents, meeting times and dates and reminders (Via Whatsapp). Or sharing assignments, documents, informational videos etc; the internet and social media facilitated an uninterrupted smooth academic year and also opened up the world for students.
Today students are not limited to the library; instead, the world has become their oyster.
